Derby v Preston

Match 25 – League.  Saturday 1st January 2011

Preston North End (A) – New Year Cheer

Derby started 2011 with an away trip to bottom side, Preston.  Both teams desperate for the points as Derby looked to be in free-fall after seven defeats in eight matches and six straight.  Plus the humiliating defeat at the City Ground three days earlier.

Luke Moore had returned to West Brom meaning Chris Porter started, Robbie Savage was back from suspension and Conor Doyle also started.

Neither side could find a way through until the seventieth minute when Derby took the lead after Porter controlled Pearson’s cross, turned and struck the ball low past the keeper into the bottom corner.

Preston’s mascot, The Deepdale Duck, was then ordered to leave after making “comments” to Bywater.

Derby made sure of the points on eighty four minutes when Doyle rolled the ball in to Porter’s path for him to squeeze the ball in to the net (which seemed to take hours!).

But Derby were made to sweat.  St Ledger hit the post followed by a blocked shot by Davidson.  Davidson then thumped his penalty home, in added time, after Steve Davies was judged to have handled the ball.

Preston nearly equalised but Conor Doyle blocked Adam Burton’s shot on the line giving Derby a much needed win – their first since November.

Final Score:  Win 2 – 1.  “A Bit Of Festive Cheer”
